The best record you have is the one you kept for another reason.

Someone raising a dispute has often been collecting since day one. Someone answering usually starts with nothing, because until the letter arrived there was nothing to answer. That sounds like a weak place to start. It usually isn't.

Where it is

  • Your phone's photo roll. Photos of a finished room, a delivery, a fence, a car. Your phone dated each one as you took it.
  • Old texts and emails. A friendly message from a year ago can matter precisely because it was sent when nothing was in dispute.
  • Work rosters, timesheets and your calendar. Kept to know which week was which, they also say where you were.
  • Bank and card statements. Dated payments, and where you were when you made them.
  • Receipts, delivery notes and booking confirmations.

What to do with it

Add each item with the date it happened. The record also shows the date you added it, which is honest: you found it later, and that's fine. None of it was a record when it was made. It becomes one because it's dated, and because it's put in order.
