When you're charged an amount you don't agree with.

A deduction from a deposit, an invoice, an HOA fine, a balance from a collector. When the number is wrong, the answer is line by line: what each part is said to be for, and what your record shows about it.

Step by step

  1. Ask for it broken down, if it isn't already. In writing.
  2. Take each line on its own. What is it for? What does your record show?
  3. Write down the lines you agree with, too. It shows you've read it fairly.
  4. Leave the total to the end. What you think is owed, if anything, is yours to say.

What to keep

Every statement or invoice, with the date it arrived; your payments; and the items that cover each line.

The letter for this

“Answer an amount charged against you” takes the charges line by line and states what the record shows. It doesn't write a conclusion for you.
